Lucknow, Aug 5 - Amit Jain, a youth in Uttar Pradesh who once aspired to become a globetrotter, has been confined to a room for the last 20 years due to a severe spinal injury. He longs for death, but has promised himself he will not commit suicide. So, Jain has requested the president to allow him to die through euthanasia.
'I can commit suicide but it's a coward's job. Therefore, I have pleaded to the president to accept my euthanasia application and get me killed in a respectable manner,' said Jain, 33, a resident of Khatauli town in Muzaffarnagar district, some 350 km from Lucknow.
After the death of his parents, Jain was deserted by his three brothers and now is completely dependent on his married sister Bina, who has exhausted all her resources in trying to treat her brother. 'Like me, she (Jain's sister) has also become helpless in a way. Although she did her best to get me treated, there has been no improvement in my condition,' said Jain.
