Lucknow, August 3 - Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday said he wanted to see Uttar Pradesh free from polio and called on doctors to work together to 'achieve the mission.'
The polio virus should be eliminated from Uttar Pradesh, and the state made free of the disease, Kalam said at a function organised here by the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU), earlier known as the King George's Medical College (KGMC), Lucknow.
Of the 136 fresh polio cases detected in the country this year, 97 are from Uttar Pradesh.
Besides eradication of polio, Kalam also appealed to doctors and medical researchers to come up with simple and cost effective tests of cardio-vascular diseases, vaccines against heart diseases, malaria and more effective treatment for tuberculosis.
About the vision for the CSMMU for the next few decades, Kalam said: 'There should be a synergy of teaching and research right from the under graduate level, a preparation of a health care road map for the nation.
