The couple had eloped from their home two days ago and Monday approached us for their marriage,' he added.

Lorik and Guddi exchanged garlands and marriage vows in the police station.

'We blessed the young couple and distributed sweets to villagers on their behalf. Later, Lorik and Guddi were taken to a nearby temple where their marriage took place as per the Hindu tradition,' said Singh.

Police later also counselled both families, who ultimately accepted the marriage.

'We explained the legal aspects of the marriage to the couple's parents, following which they agreed to accept the couple,' said Singh.

Maharajganj is about 300 km from Lucknow.
