New Delhi, Sep 7 - Shahdara in east Delhi has not been receiving water supply for close to three months as the locality comes at the tail end of a supply line, authorities explained before the Delhi High Court Monday.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in its reply to the court said: 'The area is situated at the tail end, so low pressure sometimes lead to erratic supply from the Bhagirathi water treatment plant.'

It also pointed out that the population of the area has almost doubled over these years, leading to a rising demand compared to the supply.

DJB was replying to a notice the court issued to the chairperson of the city water authority, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and other executive officers.

The court was hearing a public interest petition filed by advocate Surendra Sharma, a resident of Mohalla Ganga Ram in Shahdara, last Wednesday. He had pleaded before the court that there has been no water supply in his area for the past 87 days.

Seeking an explanation, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Manmohan issued notice to the chairperson, CEO, the executive engineer and the chairman of the Trans Yamuna Area Development Board.
