DGP Anand Shankar said that he would not wear the 'tilak' on his forehead if it was against the police manual.
'I am studying the police manual to know if it is there,' he said.
Shankar, who is said to be a Krishna devotee, had last week asked policemen to wear their uniform instead of khadi clothes as they get an allowance to buy uniforms.
'What is wrong in being asked to wear the uniform?' he said.
A policeman is paid Rs.4,500 as uniform allowance per annum apart from other allowances.
'You all are members of the uniformed force. It does not suit you to present yourself before senior police officials in their offices in khadi clothes,' Shankar had said at a function to mark Janmashtami.
