New Delhi, Aug 19 - Top seed Vishnu Vardhan of India recovered from a second-set setback on a hot, humid day to beat temperamental Briton Max Jones 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, and enter the
quarter-finals of the $10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) at the DLTA complex here Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Vardhan, who won the last ITF tournament here in July, served big and his powerful groundstrokes rattled his opponent. To add to his misery, Jones struggled to land his first serve.
The Briton could hold his serve only once in the first set, in the fourth game, and Vishnu reeled off the last three games as Jones kept spraying his shots.
A couple of forehand errors by Vardhan gave Jones an unexpected break in the fourth game of the second set and that spurred the Briton to raise his level of play by a notch. His first serves percentage improved and he started hitting fluently. He comfortably closed the set in the ninth game.
Stung, Vardhan played with purpose in the decider, breaking Jones in the sixth game, before closing the set and the match after one hour and 55 minutes.
'I am glad that I pulled it off.
