Lalgarh (West Bengal), Aug 5 - Suspected Maoist guerrillas Wednesday killed two villagers in the trouble-torn Lalgarh region of West Bengal, police said.
These two killings now take to six the number of people killed by the Leftist ultras since the West Bengal police and central paramilitary forces began a joint operation to flush out the Maoists from Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.
According to sources, one of the two killed was a member of the Gono Protirodh Committee (GPC), an anti-Maoist organisation in Lalgarh that is said to have received tacit support from the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the state. The other villager who was killed was dubbed as a police informer by the extremists.
'The incident took place today (Wednesday) when a group of Maoists surrounded the house of Gunodhor Singh of Majugeria village under Belpahari police station area,' a police officer said.
'The armed Maoists dragged Singh to the Bhulabheda forest area, a few kilometres away from the village, and shot him twice. Singh died at the spot,' he added.
The Maoists, however, have not claimed responsibility for the 40-year-old's death.
