In the case for which he is already in jail, Bhagwan Das had met a teacher, Ranjana Palit, in a case relating to her family. She later developed intimate relations with him and became pregnant in 1998. Das wanted her to undergo an abortion, but when she refused to do so, he shot her dead.
The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and N.N. Singh -- the father-in-law of the forest ranger -- who was then a CBI Superintendent of Police (SP), supervised the investigation.
Das had asked Singh to weaken the case but he refused. On the basis of the CBI inquiry, Das was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2005.
Police said they will take Bhagwan Das on remand to interrogate him in the murder of forest ranger. Police will also seek permission for a narco test to ascertain the reasons for the murder.
