Raipur, July 29 - The opposition Congress staged a walkout Wednesday in Chhattisgarh state assembly after an almost two-hour long heated debate over an alleged multi-million-rupee scam in procurement of paddy under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule.
The Congress alleged that the cooperative societies claimed to have paid millions of rupees to farmers in exchange of paddy but actually the procurement and payment were made only on paper.
The 38-member Congress in a 90-member state assembly slammed the BJP for allegedly engineering the racket for sale of 14 lakh metric tonnes paddy in the last season that ended in January this year.
The Congress walked out when the government rejected its demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and for bringing a white paper on the paddy procurement.
The BJP was found cornered as Leader of the Opposition Ravindra Choubey and the state's former chief minister Ajit Jogi turned heat on the treasury benches for allegedly trying to cover up the scam.
