Bangalore, July 22 - Compromising on their daily dose of sleep, hundreds of Bangaloreans woke up early morning to witness the century's longest solar eclipse Wednesday, but clouds played spoilsport during their much awaited adventure.

Around 200 scientists, research scholars and other people gathered at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden at 5.30 a.m. here but thick clouds unfortunately came in their way to witnessing the celestial spectacle.

'As the rainy season is on, we were expecting clouds during the morning. It was unfortunate, but then it's beyond our control,' Professor Siraj Hasan, director of IIA (Indian Institute of Astrophysics), told IANS.

Another group of enthusiasts also gathered at Bannerghatta National Park to view the phenomenon. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) had also made arrangements to watch the eclipse from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
