New Delhi, Aug 28 - The Nehru Cup league match between Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan turned inconsequential Friday when All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced that India are already in the final and won't have to depend on the outcome of the match.
Sri Lanka would have kept themselves in the hunt for a place in the final had they beaten Kyrgyzstan by seven goals or more. In that case, Sri Lanka and India would have been on six points each. India, however, had a match in hand against Syria and for
Sri Lanka to go through, the hosts would have to lose.
But all these mathematical calculation went for a toss when AIFF said that Sri Lanka's victory over Kyrgyzstan would have no bearing on the outcome of tournament as the Asian Football Confederation's new rule says that in case of a tie on points, the winner of the match between the two will reach the final.
Sri Lanka's possibility of reaching the final was cut down since India had beaten them earlier in the round robin.
AIFF had earlier maintained that a better-goal difference would be the criteria for passage to the final in case two teams are locked in points tally.
