New Delhi, Aug 20 - Over 32,500 people were fined for violating traffic rules in Delhi in the past three days with the highest number of drivers booked for jumping the red light, Delhi Police said Thursday.

Police have issued 32,687 tickets between Aug 16-19 - with over 10,000 fine slips issued on a single day Wednesday.

During ongoing Safe Pedestrian Crossing Fortnight drive, 4,872 people were fined for parking at improper places, 4,713 were penalised for over-speeding and dangerous driving, 1,212 people were fined for jaywalking and 1,656 booked for crossing the stop-lines.

'The drive is an attempt to generate awareness among pedestrians and motorists to become responsible road users. During this period, a number of activities to make pedestrians and motorists aware are also lined up,' said a senior traffic police official.

The official said that pedestrians accounted for over half of the deaths in road accidents. In 2008, Delhi recorded 2,088 deaths due to road accidents. Of these, 1,075, were pedestrians.
