Agra, Aug 14 - Over a dozen people were arrested when a group of junior doctors clashed with hospital workers in a medical college in this Uttar Pradesh city, police said Friday.
On Thursday afternoon, junior doctors armed with hockey sticks and iron rods beat up hospital employees and this led to stone pelting between the two sides. The doctors' action was in retaliation to an alleged attack by hospital workers on them Wednesday.
Dozens of policemen, doctors, workers and a media photographer were injured in the clash.
'It was an hour-long stone pelting between the two sides, with the cops reduced to spectators,' said a shopkeeper who had to close his shop and run for cover.
'The whole college campus and the hospital looked like a cantonment with the deployment of additional forces,' said Ramji Lal, a patient who chose to get himself admitted to a private nursing home.
Police arrested men from both groups who were later released on personal bonds.
'The doctors and 'karamcharis' (workers) should have shown restraint and concern for the health needs of the people. The guilty need to be disciplined,' said social activist Mukesh.
