New Delhi, Sep 22 - Sports Minister M.S. Gill Tuesday met the victorious Davis Cup tennis team and said his decision to allow only Indian citizens to represent the country in the international sporting events has proved to be a success.
India Sunday beat South Africa 4-1 to enter the elite World Group for the first time in 11 years.
Gill met India's No.1 Somdev Devvaraman, teenaged sensation Yuki Bhambri along with the supporting staff of the team and congratulated them on their performance.
'I am happy that my decision last year to insist that only those Indian players who hold an Indian passport play for India has led to success,' Gill said in a statement.
'Our former stars were fading. Today in Devvaraman, Bopanna and Bhambri, we have a new young team that will take Indian tennis to new glories in the years to come,' Gill said.
'I congratulate them, but I do want to point out that they have to do many years of intensive training, and 'tapasya' before they can really hit the top in world tennis. I am confident they will show dedication, and determination,' he said.
