New Delhi, Sep 16 - State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Wednesday said it has bid for Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular's Sri Lankan operations.
'We have put an official bid for Millicom's Sri Lankan operations,' BSNL chairman and managing director Kuldeep Goyal told reporters on the sidelines of a conference here.
Goyal, however, did not divulge any further details.
Millicom International, which provides prepaid cellular telephony services to more than 30 million customers in 16 emerging markets in Latin America, Africa and Asia, has put its assets in Sri Lanka, Laos and Cambodia up for sale, and expects to complete the deals by the first quarter of 2010.
BSNL had earlier said that it was open to acquisitions and was scouting for lucrative deals.
The public sector undertaking is also believed to be considering an invitation to join a consortium that is buying a 46 percent stake in Kuwaiti telecom firm Zain.
