Lucknow, Sep 8 - Marriages, they say, are made in heaven. In Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district, the police helped a love-struck couple to get married and also persuaded the two families to accept their union.
Lorik (23) and Guddi (21) of Aauratar village in the district eloped Sunday and reached the Nichlaul police station seeking help to become man and wife.
Learning that the couple were adults, policemen got into the act. They conducted their wedding at the station Monday evening. The couple exchanged garlands and marriage vows in the police station.
'The police station turned into a wedding venue,' Nichlaul police station chief A.K. Singh told IANS over telephone.
'We blessed the couple and distributed sweets to villagers. Later, Lorik and Guddi were taken to a nearby temple where their marriage took place in line with Hindu tradition,' said Singh.
Police later counselled both families, who ultimately accepted the marriage.
'We explained the legal aspects of the marriage to the couple's parents, following which they agreed to accept the couple,' said Singh.
