Spa-Francorrchamps, Aug 30 - India's Karun Chandhok finished seventh in the GP2 race here Sunday to somewhat compensate for his retirement in the feature race.
The weekend started off with a damp track for practice, in which all drivers started off with wet tyres. Chandhok went sixth on his first lap and remained in that position for the first half of practice.
Earlier, on a dry track for qualifying, Chandhok finished in sixth place. However, in the feature race, Chandhok struggled with the car and subsequently retired when running in sixth position.
The retirement forced Chandhok to start in 18th place for the sprint race, but moved up to 13th by the end of the first lap. He fought his way to 10th before the safety car came out when Maldonado and Kobayashi crashed. This put him in eighth place before overtaking Valsecchi to finish in seventh place, just outside the points.
Speaking on the sprint race Chandhok said: 'We had a great car today but starting in 18th place this is the best that we could do. After yesterday's race we made some major changes to the car and it felt very good to drive. This has always been my favourite circuit so I enjoyed driving here today. It is disappointing that we did not have the same car yesterday but this is racing.'
