New Delhi, Aug 27 - An Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet Thursday scrambled to intercept an Air France plane that entered India from Pakistan and was using the wrong Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) code, officials said.

A MiG-29 jet immediately scrambled to 'intercept and investigate the identity' of the aircraft.

'IAF radars picked up an aircraft today (Thursday) morning southeast of Amritsar in the northern sector. The aircraft, at a flight level of 37,000 feet, had entered Indian airspace on an established border entry point. However, the aircraft was not in communication and also its secondary radar response code (IFF) was not correct and the aircraft identified as 'Unknown',' IAF officials said here.

The fighter jet was immediately despatched to investigate.

However, the aircraft started transmitting the correct identification code and was identified by air defence radar as a civil airliner of Air France (AFR-164). The MiG-29 was then told to return to base.

The Air France flight was on way to Bangkok from Paris.
