New Delhi, Sep 22 - Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy Tuesday filed a public interest petition in the Delhi High Court that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) lacked necessary safeguards to protect the integrity of a poll outcome and demanded that they be replaced.
The court will hear Swamy's plea Wednesday.
In his petition, Swamy stated that the EVMs should be of international standards as prevalent in other countries.
'The Election Commission should at least provide for paper receipts of the votes cast for the voter to verify. This move would ensure that a vote cast is secured and the election is not rigged,' he said in his petition.
He stated that though electronic voting machines offer a myriad of benefits, nine suggested safeguards that are absolutely essential to protect the integrity of outcomes are not in place in Indian EVMs.
