Thimpu, Sep 21 - An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale Monday killed three people in Munggar in Bhutan, reports said.
Kuensel, a government-run newspaper in Bhutan, said the three people were killed in Munggar, about 500 km from Thimpu. The epicentre was plotted in Munggar.
'There was extensive damage to monasteries, schools, houses and other structures in eastern Bhutan,' the newspaper report added.
The tremors were also felt in parts of Assam, other north-eastern states of India, and West Bengal at 2.26 p.m. No casualties were reported.
Munggar District Magistrate Sherab Tenzin said: 'A number of houses, schools and other structures have been damaged. All these structures are made of mud and stones with tin roofs.'
He said police and other rescue teams have been sent to the region to assess the damage.
