Srinagar, Sep 17 - Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday intervened to get passport for the son of a former militant so that he could travel to Spain and Brazil for special professional training at football clubs there.
The state criminal investigations department (CID) had denied a passport to Basharat Bashir Baba on the grounds that his father had been a militant here. The chief minister intervened and told the department to immediately clear Basharat Bashir because he cannot be punished for a fault which his relatives had committed.
Following the chief minister's orders, the local CID Thursday cleared Basharat Bashir's name, an official press release said here.
Ironically, Basharat's father was involved in militancy here in early 1990s when Basharat was not even born.
Brazilian football coach, Juan Marcos Troia who held a coaching camp in Srinagar recently had selected Basharat Bashir for specialised football training at coaching camps in Spain and Brazil.
The chief minister has also told the authorities concerned to clear the passports of all intending Haj pilgrims whose relatives might have been involved in militancy.
